Photographer David LaChapelle, known for combining a hyper-realistic aesthetic with social messages, makes reference to the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Snow White and incorporates the geometric shapes and designs of the art deco movement into his latest creation, featuring pop star Katy Perry, for the 2012 advertising campaign for the GHD Scarlett Collection. The world famous, art deco, Chrysler Building illuminates the New York skyline through a faux window behind the heroine, who holds a half-eaten red apple. The ornate nature of the black and red room suggests a luxurious Manhattan apartment or 5th Avenue boutique hotel, with the distinctive fan shape of art deco present in the design of the dressing table; it’s mirror and the heroine’s shoes and handbag. All these elements combine to bring to life the sophistication and decadence of the art deco era in an authentic but modern interpretation of a well-known fairy tale.
